Ignition locks are subject to corrosion-forming surface compounds, such as oxides, sulfides, and sulfates. These compounds can occur during daily use when the existing grease does not meet the ASTM D4048 1A Copper Corrosion standard.
In an example case, a customer's previous grease was not of stable quality. This led to increased contact resistance, which affected the transfer of signals or current through the conductor, leading to warranty issues.
A synthetic grease applied on the contact could help prevent copper corrosion and reduce wear resistance between parts.
For this scenario, MOLYKOTE® G 1041 Grease was chosen. This multipurpose polyalphaolefin (PAO) lubricant protects against corrosion and contact resistance of the copper contacts.
MOLYKOTE® G 1041 Grease is formulated for plastic-to-plastic and plastic-to-metal applications where anti-corrosion performance is required in a lubricant. Additional benefits of this multipurpose grease include:
MOLYKOTE® G 1041 Grease is best applied to cleaned points of lubrication. This grease can be applied by brush, spatula, or automatic filling device.
This grease was formulated as a lubricant for gears, actuators, and bearings with application-engineered properties, such as low-temperature (−60°C) performance. Yellow metal corrosion inhibitors are added to this grease, making it a beige color. A lithium-based thickener is used in this formula, resulting in an NGLI grade 2 grease.
MOLYKOTE® G 1041 Grease is designed to lubricate metal-to-plastic and plastic-to-plastic interfaces, including fiber-reinforced plastics. It has wide temperature stability, good wear and load properties, and low evaporation and noise.
